Degummed cashew nut shell liquid

alternative

Degummed Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a versatile, non-edible byproduct of the cashew processing industry. While raw CNSL contains high levels of gums and impurities, the degumming process refines the liquid, making it a valuable industrial raw material, particularly in the green chemical sector.

Characteristics

  • Appearance:
    A dark reddish-brown, viscous liquid.
  • Odour:
    Characteristic phenolic, slightly acrid scent.
  • Solubility:
Soluble in most organic solvents; insoluble in water.
  • Specific gravity:
Typically ranges between 0.950 and 0.970 at 25°C.
  • Viscosity:
Significantly lower than raw CNSL, improving its flow and “pumpability” in industrial settings.
  • Thermal stability:
It can withstand higher temperatures without “charring” or forming sludge.
  • Improved Reactivity:
The absence of impurities allows for more predictable polymerisation when creating resins.
  • Extended Shelf Life:
Removing organic matter reduces the risk of sedimentation and oxidation over time.
  • Clarity:
While still dark, the liquid is much clearer and free of suspended solids compared to the crude version.

Note: Degummed Cashew Nut Shell Liquid is a caustic substance. It can cause skin irritation, blistering, or dermatitis upon direct contact. It is essential to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and goggles, and ensure adequate ventilation when handling this material in a laboratory or industrial setting.

Applications

In manufacturing and global exports, degummed CNSL is a great “green” alternative to petrochemicals:

  • Friction Materials:
Used to manufacture brake linings and clutch facings due to its excellent heat resistance.
  • Surface Coatings:
Acts as a base for anti-corrosive paints, especially in marine environments.
  • Laminating Resins:
Provides flexibility and chemical resistance to industrial laminates.
  • Insulating Varnishes:
Utilised in electrical components for its high dielectric strength.
  • Foundry Chemicals:
It serves as a core oil in foundry operations, helping to bind sand moulds that require high thermal stability.
  • Rubber Compounding:
It acts as a plasticiser and processing aid, improving the ageing properties and tensile strength of rubber products.
  • Adhesives and Sealants:
It is used in the formulation of heavy-duty industrial adhesives, particularly those used in marine environments.
  • Cardanol Production:
Degummed CNSL is the primary source of Cardanol, a distilled phenol used in the manufacture of surfactants, agricultural chemicals, and high-performance polymers.
  • Wood Preservatives:
Its natural antimicrobial and insecticidal properties make it an effective base for wood stains and preservatives that protect against termites and fungal decay.

Degummed CNSL is distinct from raw CNSL in that the naturally occurring gums and mucilage have been removed. This process ensures the liquid has a lower viscosity and higher stability, making it significantly easier to pump and process in automated industrial machinery without clogging or fouling the equipment.
